But I’d like to add that the lack of any sort of government intervention or support when the AIDS epidemic began really allowed it to be rampant in the gay community because the government saw it as the gay disease. There was no response of any kind from the government or from the medical establishment and Reagan didn’t utter the word AIDS until 1987. It was not so much that gay men were more risky or that they had more partners, but that this was something completely new that no on had even thought about before and it happened to affect the gay community in America. And no one really cared.A great man I’ve had the privilege to meet and hear giving a speech about the epidemic, San Francisco in the ’70s, and the gay movement is Cleve Jones. I highly recommend to look him up and read his interviews with Frontline The Age of AIDS. But, again, thank you. I’ve donated blood for 3 years and I was upset that I couldn’t this year.But the ban (hopefully) will be lifted later this year in the UK actually. Men who have had anal or oral sex with another man in the past 12 months, with or without a condom, will still not be eligible to donate blood. This also goes for women (and other folks) who have sex with men who have sex with men. We have a long fight in America still to go though.[]
